Free Online Spelling Test: A Step-by-Step Guide for Australian Families

Spelling Test app setup with Year 3, 10 words and No Timer selected

A free online spelling test gives learners a way to hear a word, spell it from memory and check the result. Spelling Test brings that routine into a browser, with Australian English practice, selectable levels and short tests. Here is how to use the Spelling Test app for a first session at home.

What do you need to start?

You need an internet-connected device with a browser, working sound and a way to type. The public practice screen lets you start a test without signing in. A parent can sit alongside a younger learner for the first attempt, especially if using a keyboard is still new.

The current setup offers Kindergarten, Years 1–12 and Adult challenge. Test lengths are 5, 10, 15 or 20 words, with No Timer and several timed options. A level is a starting point for practice: if the words feel too hard or too easy, adjust the next session.

How do you take your first spelling test?

  1. Open the app. Go to app.spellingtest.au and find “Ready, set, spell!”.
  2. Check the sound. Use “Check my sound” and set the volume before beginning.
  3. Choose your level. Start with the learner’s school year, or a level suggested by their teacher.
  4. Keep the first test short. Choose 5 words and No Timer so there is time to learn the controls.
  5. Select “Start spelling test”. Listen to the spoken word. The test also provides controls for a definition and a sentence.
  6. Type and check. Enter the spelling from memory, select “Check Spelling” and follow the feedback.
  7. Review the difficult words. After the session, open My words to plan a focused follow-up.

For the first attempt, concentrate on the process. Knowing how to replay audio, enter an answer and check a correction matters more than completing the longest test.

Which settings work well for a first session?

Five untimed words are a manageable way to explore the app. Move to 10 words when the learner is comfortable with the interface. Timed choices can be an optional challenge later; they do not need to be the starting point.

If a child recognises a word but struggles to type it, separate the two tasks. Ask them to say the letters before entering the answer. This helps an adult notice whether the difficulty is spelling recall or finding keys.

Keep a pencil and paper nearby if the school test is handwritten. After the digital session, writing one or two difficult words in a sentence connects the practice to classroom work.

What should you do after a mistake?

Choose one word to discuss. Compare the attempt with the correct spelling and identify the exact difference: a missing letter, a swapped pair or an unfamiliar ending. Say the word, look closely, cover it and try again from memory.

For example, if a learner writes “becaus”, draw attention to the final “e” in “because”. This is an illustrative teaching example, not a claim that the app will present that word in every test.

Return to the word on another day to see whether the spelling can still be recalled. For a broader home routine, read HypeLab’s guide to preparing for school spelling tests at home.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spelling Test practice app free to try?

Yes. The public Spelling Test website offers free online practice, and the app lets visitors launch a test without logging in. School accounts and licensing are a separate offering.

Do I need to download an app?

No download is required for browser practice. Open app.spellingtest.au on your device and check that sound and typing work before starting.

Can I practise without a timer?

Yes. Select No Timer when building the test. This is useful when a learner wants time to listen again and think through an answer.
